ASICS Running Shoes for Women & Men
History of ASICS Shoes
ASICS is an acronym of the Latin phrase “Anima Sana In Corpore Sano” which means "healthy soul in a healthy body." The expression quotes the words of the ancient Roman poet Juvenal, and represents the mission that Onitsuka had for his new company – and the customers who wore ASICS shoes. Shortly after WWII, ASICS shoes founder Kihachiro Onitsuka began producing basketball shoes out of his living room in Kobe, Japan, under the Onitsuka Tiger label. Quickly gaining popularity in Japan, his work with marathon runners in the 1950s brought the brand to prominence in the international running shoe community. (Fun fact: The eventual founders of Nike started their business selling the Japanese brand at track meets.) Nevertheless, Tiger remained a small sportswear brand until 1966, with the release of the Mexico 66, whose design is still visible in modern ASICS running shoes.
During the 1972 Olympics, Onitsuka Tiger collaborated with several other small brands, who ultimately merged to form ASICS. The dawning of the new, unified brand was perfectly timed with the early 80’s fitness craze, and the rest is history!
